Manchester United booked their place in the Last 16 of the Europa League after a convincing 4-0 aggregate win against St. Etienne, with the Red Devils winning the second-leg 1-0 in France on Wednesday.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored the only goal of the game after just 16 minutes, with the Armenian playmaker flicking in a Juan Mata cross.
Jose Mourinho chose to field a full-strength 11, despite the weekend’s EFL Cup final against Southampton, and his decision somewhat backfired when goalscorer Mkhitaryan was forced off with a hamstring injury early on.
Midfielder Michael Carrick also picked up a calf comnplaint, with the injuries taking the gloss off a very comfortable evening for the Premier League side.
Paul Pogba in particular, was outstanding in midfield through the encounter.
Just after the hour-mark, Eric Bailly saw red for two bookings picked up in quick succession. However, the Red Devils were rarely troubled by their Ligue 1 hosts.
Mourinho will now turn his attention to Sunday’s clash with Southampton, and deal with those two unfortunate injuries.
