Just like that, Merseyside Police have launched an investigation into the mass scuffle that broke out during the second half of Everton’s 2-1 home defeat against Lyon in the Europa League on Thursday evening.
The ensemble slanging match began when Ashley Williams knocked Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes on his derriere, only to culminate in an irate Everton fan marching down from the Gwladys Street End terrace, young child ‘neath his arm, to aim a slap and an expletive or two at the OL players.

The statement from Merseyside Police reads thus:
Merseyside Police can confirm officers are investigating following a disturbance on the pitch during a football match between Everton and Lyon at Goodison Park last night, Thursday 19th October.
Detectives will be reviewing footage and speaking to witnesses to establish what, if any, offences have been committed.
UEFA are also likely to take action against Everton, but are currently waiting on the referee’s match report to be submitted before deciding on an angle of attack.
