Luton Town have announced that their Kenilworth Road ground in to be renamed the “Prostate Cancer UK Stadium” for one day and one day only in order to raise awareness of the disease and the charity’s continuing efforts to combat it.
The stadium will be rebranded for next Monday’s (24th March) League Two game against Wycombe Wanderers.
10,000 men die from prostate cancer every year which is why Prostate Cancer UK have launched their highly successful ‘Men United‘ campaign to help promote men’s health, raise awareness of prostate cancer and also provide support by primarily using professional football as a springboard.
That’s why, as you may have noticed, every single Football League footballer’s shirt number is carrying their ‘Man of Men’ logo this season…
Luton’s chief executive, Gary Sweet, told the club’s official website:
“We are extremely proud to be the first club to partner with a charity such as Prostate Cancer UK by renaming our stadium, albeit temporarily.
“When we first hinted at the idea we were met with a mixed reaction – which is understandable given the history of the ground, and the amount of affection our supporters hold for Kenilworth Road.
“We felt sure that once the full story emerged about our supporting Prostate Cancer UK, our supporters would understand and fully support the move.
“Given the statistics, there’s every chance that by helping to increase the awareness of this disease and the charity, that someone’s son, father or grandfather could be helped by spotting the signs early and seeking help.”
“This is a first for Luton Town and a first in football and we are delighted to be teaming up with a charity which has supported the game, in particular supporters and players past and present, so well.”
As such, fans will be greeted by this sight when they turn up for Monday night’s game…
