I know full well that there’s a lot of you out there that could care less about this two-bit Olympic Team GB wossname, but for those who do; here are the draws for the group stages of the London 2012 Olympic football competition.
The balls were fished by none other than (the original) Ronaldo and (sadly, the original) Robbie Savage and, as such, the Team GB men’s side will take on Senegal in their opening fixture at Old Trafford on 26th July – also drawing United Arab Emirates and Uruguay in Group A.
BBC pundit Garth Crooks described Team GB’s draw as being ‘easy.’ As ever with all the things Crooks, the exact opposite of what he says is to be regarded as true. Team GB out in the group stage? I’m going to have a shiny halfpenny on it.
Hope Powell’s women’s team will play New Zealand in their first game at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on 25th July, with Cameroon and Brazil lying in wait.
The 16-team Men’s draw in full…
Group A: Great Britain, Senegal, United Arab Emirates, Uruguay
Group B: Mexico, South Korea, Gabon, Switzerland
Group C: Brazil, Egypt, Belarus, New Zealand
Group D: Spain, Japan, Honduras, Morocco
…and the 12-team Women’s draw…
Group E: Great Britain, New Zealand, Cameroon, Brazil
Group F: Japan, Canada, Sweden, South Africa
Group G: USA, France, Colombia, Korea DPR
Don’t ask me why they’ve named the groups like that (consecutively across the men’s and women’s competitions) because I haven’t got the foggiest.
