Dutch striker Roy Makaay (aka ‘The Phantom’ – great nickname) is to retire at the end of the season.
The 35-year-old former Holland international informed the Rotterdammers’ technical director Leo Beenhakker of his decision.
Makaay joined Feyenoord in 2007 after solid spells with Bayern Munich and Deportivo La Coruna. He won 43 caps for Holland, won two Bundesliga titles and the DFB Pokal twice with Bayern as well as the Primera Division crown and Copa del Rey with Depor. On his day, he was one of the most dangerous and deadly strikers in Europe.
Makaay’s final game for the club could be the second leg of this season’s Dutch cup final against Ajax at De Kuip on May 6.
