During the very same match that saw Cristiano Ronaldo score his 500th goal of the season with an impudent backheel, came an incident right at the other end of the spectrum. Sergio Ramos battered Rayo Vallecano’s Diego Costa across the chin with a reverse elbow, which saw the Real Madrid centre-half escape scot free and the Vallecano man booked for having the temerity to complain…
The fact that Ramos sizes Costa up over his shoulder is a tell-tale sign that the elbow was premeditated. Nasty play from a defender that seems to lapse like this fairly regularly, despite being talented enough not to have to do so.
It probably won’t surprise you that Pepe also got in on the act – planting his studs on Piti’s ankle after sprinting 20-yards to do so…
Again, no punishment other than the concession of a free-kick was deemed necessary.
