Ten-man Porto put in a collective wibble of a performance on Sunday evening and duly suffered their first home league defeat since 2008 as Estoril managed to snaffle themselves a 1-0 at the Estadio do Dragao courtesy of a late penalty.
Previously, Porto had gone an impressive 81 games unbeaten on home soil (last losing 3-2 to Leixoes in October, 2008) though that was before Evandro showed up and tucked away his 78th-minute spot-kick – duly putting the kibosh on his opponents’ all-conquering run.
The result left Porto third in the Primeira Liga table, two points behind Sporting in second and a mere four points behind Benfica at the top – you could hardly describe the situation as ‘perilous’ – but that didn’t stop their fans from flying off the handle, with the team leaving the pitch after the game amid a hail of angry jeers as several supporters made ‘white flag’ gestures as the players slouched back to the dressing rooms…
Indeed, things were so super serious after the game that Porto’s coach, Paulo Fonseca, openly stated he would be considering his position despite only being in the job since the start of the season, saying during a touchline interview: “I’m now going to talk to the president.”
This led to the club’s aforementioned 76-year-old president, Jorge Pinto da Costa, having to jostle with frenzied reporters while live on air after being asked if Fonseca had tended his resignation one too many times for his liking…
As both angry fans and the media continued to swarm outside the stadium, Ricardo Quaresma then veered his car towards encroaching reporters as he made his getaway…
Hey! Porto! When you’re finished playing silly boggers can everyone just calm down a bit, yeah?
