Monaco 0-2 Arsenal (Agg: 3-3 – Monaco win on away goals) – Champions League Last 16 2nd Leg – 17th March 2015

The Last 16 of the Champions League just wouldn’t feel right if Arsenal didn’t crash out after a disastrous first-leg followed by a heroic failure in the return fixture. And on Tuesday night in Monte Carlo, there was a severe case of deja-vu as a superb performance from the Gunners just wasn’t quite enough to secure to passage into the quarter-finals.

A goal in either half, from Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey, put the visitors within touching distance of a remarkable win. However, despite going close on a number of occasions and totally bossing the game, Arsene Wenger’s men just couldn’t bag that all-important third goal.

The Frenchman will take heart from a fine display from Mesut Ozil in particular, but once again a sloppy first-leg has put paid to the north Londoners’ Euro-aspirations. Surely they’ll finally learn from their (repeated) mistakes?

It certainly needs to be noted that Alexis certainly earned a penalty in the first half.
