Arsenal fans may well sing “We’ve go Ozil, Mesut Ozil, I just don’t think you understand”.
However, against Atletico Madrid on Thursday night, it’s fair to say that the German World Cup winner failed to live up to his star-billing when his team needed him most.
Stalwart of the ‘Invincibles’ Martin Keown was fuming over Ozil’s performance on the night, with the BT pundit pulling no punches in his takedown of the £350,000 per week Arsenal playmaker.
I don’t know how many illnesses he’s had this season but the fellow his not kidding me.
He wasn’t fit to wear the shirt for me tonight, and I’ve seen this a lot.
It needs to be said because he needs to be dug out.
These are crocodile tears we’re seeing from the player. He’s not conning me.
Yikes. Don’t old back there, Martin!

To be fair to Ozil, he did put the ball into the box on more than one occasion, with no team-mate there to finish it off.
However, despite his truly world-class vision and touch, it is fair to say that the German superstar ain’t the kind of player to rally his team-mates in times of need.
On the other hand, maybe Ozil’s ability to disappoint says more about Arsene Wenger and his own inability to motivate and organise his star players than it does about the German?
