Danny Welbeck suffered what looks to be a serious injury as Arsenal and Sporting Lisbon played out a fairly drab 0-0 stalemate at the Emirates.

The striker, making just his fourth start of the season, went down and stayed down after being crumpled by Sporting defender Bruno Gaspar with less than 30 minutes played.

It certainly appeared that Welbeck fell awkwardly on his ankle, and the anguished looks from his teammates as he was given oxygen were enough to paint the picture…

Welbeck, almost devoid of luck when it comes to injury woes, was stretchered from the pitch and replaced by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Mesut Ozil, given the night off by Unai Emery, was one of the first prominent figures to wish his stricken colleague well…

Finger’s crossed that Welbeck’s injury isn’t as grim as first thought, though initial reaction doesn’t seem overly promising on that front, with Arsenal confirming to broadcasters that their man had sustained a “significant lower leg injury” while the game was still being played.

If anybody deserves a fortunate let-off for once, it’s him.
