Aston Villa’s season continues to hit new depths of dismalness, with the news that Gabriel Agbonlahor has stepped down from his position as club captain, as well as receiving a hefty fine from the Villans.

The 29-year-old striker has endured a rather dismal season, netting just one goal in 18 games. While off the pitch, Agbonlahor was caught indulging in some shisha pipe shenanigans as well as finding himself put on an embarrassing personal fitness plan in recent weeks.

In rescinding his captaincy, the (once) pacy forward also apologised after being pictured on a night out in London (on the hippy crack) directly following Villa’s relegation from the top-flight. That latest indiscretion earned the Birmingham-born star a suspension from the club, which will be lifted on Monday.

Here’s the chunky chap’s statement in full…

Aston Villa themselves released a statement concerning Agbonlahor’s suspension and decision to hand back his captain’s armband…

Despite the fact Agbonlahor will be available for selection after the weekend, it’s unlikely he’ll play again this season. What an annus horribilis this has been for the Villans!
