Stewart Downing Outdoes Wiggins And Hoy, Heads For A Knighthood After Scoring Cracker For Liverpool In Europa League (Video)
By Alan Duffy
Forget the achievements of Bradley Wiggins or Chris Hoy, the real sporting story of this summer is the news that Liverpool’s Stewart Downing, a man who failed to score a single goal in the league in 2011/12 (and only managed two in total – both in the FA Cup) has already found the net in 2012/13.
The former Middlesbrough man’s miraculous strike came against Belarusian side FC Gomel in Liverpool’s Europa League qualifier to give the Reds a 1-0 away win to take back to Anfield.
New boy Fabio Borini started while Joe Cole, back from his loan spell in France, also lined out for Brendan Rodgers’ side. Although the former West Ham man did only last 23 minutes. However, it was Downing of all people, who grabbed the vital goal. Maybe this season he’ll rediscover his shooting boots consistently under his new boss?

Was that in the 3rd or 4th quarter?
Hell Yeah!!
We did not deserve to win that game at all.
I feel so bad for that defender who just collapses after the goal goes in.
….I’ll still take it anyway
so downing scores a cracker, team GB advances to knock out, arsenal have a chance at winning a trophy this season…THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END!!
“That left foot we talked about!”
How could they even talk about Downing’s ‘skill’ he’s been utter shite -even in that match.
I was one of those people giving Downing endless amounts of flack last season, but I have to admit that was a damn good goal! :D There’s Hope for Liverpool yet!
£20m and 1 goal. In a friendly. Against FC Gomel. Not a bad deal, that.
I wasn’t entirely convinced when Warrior released the kits but they look great.
@plops: It wasn’t a friendly, it was the first-leg of the Europa League third qualifying round
@Phiwe Ah yes, so it is. I did read that bit but somehow my brain miscomputed the information. I’m not sure where it went. I hope it’s not in the porn folder. Mind you, Europa League qualifying is about as important as a friendly, ha.
Off topic, but who was the fashion aficionado who decided to put white numbers on those exclusively red-and-gold kits? Warrior did a fine job with the design (as Phiwe noted), but somebody completely undid that with the mismatching numbers.
Somebody get Brendan Rodgers a couple of collar stays
