Photos: Aston Villa 1-2 Man Utd, Carling Cup Final – Rooney FTW
By Ollie Irish
Super sub Wazza Rooney – who else? – scored a winner in the 74th minute as Man Utd won their 33rd trophy under Fergie.
It had started so well for Villa, when James Milner scored from the penalty spot after only five minutes, following Nemanja Vidic’s last-ditch foul on Gabriel Agbonlahor. Shame on Phil Dowd for bottling what looked a clear red-card offence. The fact that Agbonlahor was not running through directly at the goal doesn’t change the fact that he was the last man and fouled an opponent in the box. Straight red, no question.
The tide began to turn when Rooney came on just before half-time to replace the crocked Michael Owen – who had scored United’s equaliser with an expert finish after 12 minutes but went off with a typical Little Mickey twinge – and by the time Rooney scored when turned out to be the winner, Villa had run out of steam.
