A man synonymous with the Republic of Ireland’s momentous Euro and World Cup adventures in the late 80s and beyond, RTE anchorman Bill O’Herlihy passed away at his home on Monday morning.

A superb broadcast journalist, the Cork-born O’Herlihy joined RTE in the 1960s and was key to the success of RTE’s football punditry, providing the solid base which allowed the likes of Eamon Dunphy, John Giles and Liam Brady to famously argue and bicker over the intricacies of the game.

O’Herlihy retired from RTE just last year, prompting this superb video tribute which included turns from Taoiseach Enda Kenny and a whole host of legendary Irish sporting names. It’s definitely worth a watch again…
