Ex-Liverpool and Republic of Ireland legend (and sneery pundit) Mark Lawrenson has always fancied himself as a clever cookie. However, on Saturday, the ex-Match of the Day pundit made not one, but two gaffs in his own personal ‘weekend horribilis’.

Capture

Firstly, appearing on a special FA Cup edition of Pointless on BBC, ‘Lawro’ gave ‘Alaska’ as an answer when asked to name an obscure country beginning with the letter ‘A’…

Then, on Match of the Day in the evening, poor old Mark, looking like a homeless vagabond, produced a magnificent slip of the tongue when discussing Steven Pienaar…

Fair play to host Gabby Logan and guest Trevor Sinclair for both managing to fight the giggles, and fair play also to Pointless host Alexander Armstrong for not giving Lawrenson a slap and making him wear a dunce’s hat.
