Just one year after securing a league and cup double, Chivas entered the 2018 Apertura season in a very different state of health, with their manager walking out, bonuses going unpaid and the club warning of a period of “financial consolidation”.

The Guadalajara club’s current financial issues were made more than obvious when new boss Jose Cardozo sat down to face the press after Sunday’s 2-1 home defeat to Santos Laguna.

While we’ve begrudgingly become used to seeing bottles of mineral water strategically placed next to the media suite microphone, this looks like a scene from the early rounds of Supermarket Sweep.

What next? A frozen chicken plonked at each end and a packet of pink wafers tucked in Cardozo’s breast pocket?

Yuck.
