Aston Villa are preparing to release Micah Richards after finally coming to the conclusion that the defender might not be earning his keep at the club.

Indeed, Richards last played pulled on the Villa shirt some 665 days ago in a 1-1 draw against Wolves in October of 2016.

Still only 30, the centre-back’s current contract runs until the end of the current season, but Steve Bruce has reportedly asked the club owner’s to pay the player off with a lump sum and send him back into the wild, thus knocking around £35,000 off Villa’s weekly wage bill.

A variety of injuries have knocked Richards off course throughout his career, but that hasn’t stopped him raking in over £3million in wages since his last senior appearance.

He was last involved in a Villa first-team squad in September 2017, when he was an unused substitute in a 2-0 League Cup defeat against Middlesbrough.

What could have been, eh?
