DC United went top of the MLS Eastern Conference with a 2-1 away win over Orlando City on Sunday afternoon.
Having provided the assist for DC’s sixth-minute opener, Wayne Rooney added the second on the half-hour mark with a smashing freekick.
After being tripped himself out on the touchline, Rooney stepped up and wrapped a powerful angled shot into the far top corner – basically as close to an ‘Olimpico’ goal as it’s possible to get without actually scoring direct from a corner…
Initial instinct says over-hit cross, but on reflection we think Rooney was actually aiming to tuck one inside that far stanchion.
Dom Dwyer scored a second-half consolation for Orlando, but the win means DC are perched atop the division, level on points (10) with Columbus Crew but ahead on goal difference and with a game in hand.
Nice to see Rooney enjoying his football again too, rather than half-arsing his way toward retirement.
