Oldham 3-2 Liverpool – FA Cup – 27th January 2013
Steven Gerrard may have been left out of Liverpool’s starting 11 for this cup clash at Boundary Park, but Brendan Rodgers still put out a strong side which should have been good enough to overcome Paul Dickov’s League One side. However, instead, the Premier League giants toiled against their lower league opponents and eventually found themselves out of the cup on a weekend of big shocks.
Matt Smith opened the scoring after just three minutes for the Latics only to see Luis Suarez level the scores on 17 minutes. However, Smith would double his tally on the stroke of half-time after some horrendous goalkeeping from Brad Jones.
With the second-half only three minutes old, the home side went further ahead when Reece Wabara headed home. That goal had come after the disappointing Fabio Borini fluffed a great chance to level the scores although a late strike from Joe Allen set up an exciting last 10 minutes. But despite their best efforts, the Merseysiders couldn’t get a third as the unfancied Oldham secured a fantastic victory.
