Last year it was a Shrek-eared Wayne Rooney, but this time round the Kent-based Edenbridge Bonfire Society, a bonfire society with their fingers on the pulse, have chosen to burn a 30-foot tall effigy of man-of-the-moment Mario Balotelli as their annual celebrity Guy.
Produced, as always, by local artist Frank Shepherd, the Balotelli effigy is seen sporting a red Super Mario cap, obligatory diamond earrings and his derby day ‘Why Always Me?’ undershirt while clutching a firework in one hand and a mansion (?) in the other.
Jon Mitchell, a committee member, explained the nervous game of ‘Guy chicken’ that the Bonfire Society were forced to play this year :
“We were getting a bit worried because nobody had done anything silly enough to be our guy, then Balotelli set his house alight with fireworks.
He’s now capitalising on his little disaster as he’s joined the campaign for firework safety so we fully support him on that.”
And that, folks, is that.
