Arsenal 1-2 Manchester United – Premier League – 22nd November 2014

Arsenal produced a trademark performance at the Emirates on Saturday, with Louis Van Gaal securing his first away win as Manchester United manager?

Dominate possession? Tick. Fail to put chances away? Tick. Give away sloppy goal? Tick. Show all the defensive nous of an under fives’ team? Tick. Yup, this was Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal at their most frustrating with Jack Wilshere and Danny Welbeck among others failing to convert fine chances for the hosts. To be fair to the Gunners, United’s opening goal was rather controversial, with Marouane Fellaini pushing Kieran Gibbs into ‘keeper Wojciech Szczesny before England full-back Gibbs unluckily directed the ball into his own goal.

A goal down but still well in the game, the Gunners then proceeded to throw caution to the wind and push too many men forward, leaving them open to counter-attack. Wayne Rooney made the most of this defensive naivety to make it 2-0 before sub Olivier Griroud got one back at the death.

While a below-par United will be delighted with the win, the Gunners continue to tread water.
