MLS star calls referee a ‘cheat’ on Twitter

Funny that Brian Ching, the first footballer we featured in our new series, Footballers Who Tweet, is now in a spot of trouble thanks to the social networking site.
Ching Tweeted the following message yesterday, immediately after Houston Dynamo lost 2-1 to Seattle Sounders:

Why was Ching so incensed? The ref had allowed a goal by Seattle’s Fredy Montero, even though it looked doubtful that all of the ball had crossed the line. See for yourself:

Very difficult to call in the heat of the moment (it didn’t look like a goal to me), but Ching clearly thought it was a ‘homer’ decision by the referee. However, he has since used Twitter to apologise for calling the ref a cheat:

Probably a wise move if he wants to avoid a fine.

I think the Big Aloha handled that fine. Everyone is prone to saying things in the moment. It’s how you address them — if you’re truly contrite that matters.
Ask Drogba, Ballack or the Mex. coach about that one.

  2. Ollie says:

Oh yeah, agreed. Just found it funny that he would Tweet about it.

  3. Dan says:

Didn’t work. MLS fined him $500 today.
